mood board

Mood Boards
The demographic profile of the target audience for my chosen magazine would roughly look something like this... the age I specified would be between 16 and 30 year olds. I made it this age group because this mood board is mainly for younger people as my mood board shows, Katy Perry, an iPod and clothing ranges like Abercrombie and Fitch. The gender would be female because it’s all about girl talk and stories that girls would be reading, the only thing that males would like about this magazine is the pictures on the front because they are of celebs that don’t have a lot of clothing on.  The region that people would live in would be in local towns to cities, I picked these areas because it would be for the more working and middle class people who would chose to read this particular magazine. There Marital Status would more likely to be single for the younger age however the people closer to their 30’s may be divorced. This magazine is all about people who are having troubles or like to read articles about the ‘sex tips’ like many working class magazines do. I think peoples social status’s for this magazine will be working to middle class (D-C1) because of their location and all the other reasons I have just been writing about because the media has stereotyped them so everyone in that category will like the magazine and this way you know what to expect or put in your magazine so that every girl in the D to C1 category will like this magazine. I think the type of people who would read this magazine would either be too young to drive/ learning or driving a car like a fiat 500 or for the older age a new Audi TT. This way, they are still modern cars and aren’t nasty cheap cars and I think it suits the targeted audience. I think that the people who would read this type of magazine would either still be living with their parents or living in an estate with a 3 bedroom house for the 30 year olds because

analysis of 2 featured articles

This magazine (NME) would have this layout because of its target audience would expect it. They would expect many pictures in this two page spread. They would also expect big bold titles to show off the artists that are featured in the magazine. The layout is set out like this because it is set out the same basically every week with the same techniques used like I have mentioned, bold text about artists, big picture with little ones dotted around the page and the information on the side bar.

Break down of cast, props setting, and location report of magazine.

For my magazine I will have to choose my location where I will take my pictures, what sort of theme they will have, like a brightly coloured theme or somewhere in a field. Who is going to be in my picture, will it be a group of people or just one person and what gender. I have chosen to take my pictures of just one girl in a patterned black and white back ground. She will be in the corner of the room and the camera angle will be looking down at her whilst she’s looking down towards the floor. I will use bright coloured writing so it stands out and I will use effects so that the magazine will be eye catching. My magazine is mainly aimed at girls so It will have elegant colours and font to set the theme.

Institutional data music magazine

NME has been around for 60 years and is a reliable and great product as a music magazine, well established brand as it is well known. They have a huge advantage as they know what their target audience would expect so can make it a great magazine with every issue.

Institutional data overview of industry

They also focus on our age groups and genders would we read a children’s magazine or would we read a fashion magazine aimed at women. They have the power to influence what everyone eats do we sit down at a fancy restaurant or do we pop to mc Donald’s for a big mac. Also what we do in our spare times weather it’s playing sports, shopping or cooking and our working class, where we live what class do we fit in the best A-C1.

This magazine called Vibe uses this layout for this magazine because it definitely suits its target audience. This is because this magazine is clearly for women, as it has a picture of a fashionable girl and her story witch is aimed at women it also shows this by the colours that the lady is wearing, very feminine and also the way the pager is set out like the title and what the writing also says. This is a good lay out for this magazine because it shows everything that a girl would want to find in this kind of magazine, also the pull quote explains the story in her words, which makes it more interesting and catching. The only thing about this magazine that I dislike is that the title for this article isn’t big enough for someone to look at it and read straight away, you have to read into the subtitle to know what who the article is about. The way they could improve this is by putting a big title at the top so the readers know instantly who it is about.

Analysis of front cover for college magazine

On the front of my magazine I have a picture of a female student sitting on the steps in front of the entrance of the collage reading a book, this shows that this magazine is for a studying environment and shows not just subjects but other events. I stuck to a certain colour scheme in my magazine so it is colour co-ordinated and this makes it look much neater and it will look more professional. I used 2 main colours orange and blue as it represents the colour of the college. I also used this type of text because it looks smart and so it is easy to read. This already makes the magazine much better because the writing is big and bold and don’t have to make too much effort to read everything. I didn’t write too much on the front cover because I know that students especially of are age don’t like to read too much about certain things so I kept the writing at the minimum but not so it looks empty. As well as this, I used the college magazine questionnaire to help me because this way I could pick the most popular answers and what people would love to see in the magazine so that I would put the most popular events and subjects so I already know that the students would be interested and would read further. I chose to take this picture in the location that I had because it suits the theme of the magazine and also it would be irrelevant to take it anywhere else, this means that it is suitable for the magazine. These reasons also helped me with what I should take the picture of. I took the picture of the female sitting down with books because it shows that she is obviously in education. Other reason is because a student on the front cover smiling makes it very positive and brightens up the mood of the magazine. I also made her wear a bright coloured headband so you don’t just look at the females face or expressions you are attracted to every part of the picture.
The only thing that I think I could improve is my skills on paint shop pro because if I knew how to use all the tools my magazine would be much more exiting and different to what it is now as i would use all the tools I can to make my magazine much better.
My contents page has a picture of 2 girls reading a college book in front of the college again to show that they are in the working environment.  I have kept the colours the same so it doesn’t look scruffy and I also put on the contents page what people said they wanted the most from the college magazine from the questionnaire.

analysing front covers

Analysing 2 magazines of my choice.
I firstly chose this magazine because it is completely different to the kind of magazine that I would create. This way I will be able to analyse both magazines in detail as they both have completely different target audiences, age and genders.
This magazine caters for the indie middle class people. NME say that they have a readership of 411000 a month and they say that 73% of that is men that particularly read this magazine. They also think that the average age of people who read this magazine is the age of 25 and classes between ABC1. Their target market is for men aged from 17-30.
I think these estimations are just right because this magazine is defiantly for people who are into indie music and likes to read about gigs as 77% of people have been to a concert in 2007 and ‘My Chemical Romance’ because as NME says 75% of people think that music is an important part of their life. The colours and the writing is just right as they fit together nicely and you can still see all the writing clearly. The other good thing about this magazine is that it is set out to appeal to the attracted audience e.g. the pictures on the side of what’s inside. And the picture on the front is for the targeted audience.
The magazine that I have chosen to analyse is called Vibe. This magazine is aimed more for hip hop & r&b fans. Vibe has over 19million people read their magazine every month. The new Vibe is the premier destination for urban music, entertainment, culture and lifestyle for the average age of 18-34 year olds. I like this magazine because even though the page is really packed with text, it all fits in together really well. The colours of the magazine are well used because it fits in with the colour scheme of using about 3 colours so it doesn’t look odd. I think the colour also helps the text by making it more exiting and something you would want to read where as some magazines have too much text so it makes it look dull and boring to read. The text is also very informal as it is laid back witch gives the R&B vibe to the front cover. This magazine also proves that it’s laid back because of the slang in the text they use like the ‘muah’ and ‘muama’ this shows that this magazine if for the working class and younger generation because of the text and language it has used.  This magazine is appealing to its target audience because on the front is a picture of Little Wayne and that is what the targeted audience is expecting.

contents pages

Analysing 2 magazine contents pages.
This contents page is from NME magazine. I chose to analyse this contents page because it is completely different to the one from the other magazine I chose called ‘Vibe’ and it also links to the analysing I done with the front covers. I like this contents page because of all of its features fit well together. They have only used the 4 colours, black, white pink and yellow to brighten the magazine up and most of all to make the colours stand out. The have used these colours well because pink and yellow don’t even go together but it makes the whole magazine a lot more exiting and this is how the special offers stand out well like the ‘£2 off!’. The layout of this magazine is very interesting because it has 3 pictures in it whereas most magazines just have the one as a background so this makes the magazine unique. They have used more than one image because all the different images relate to the target audience in some way, the different bands and the small image has a skull and cross bone if you zoom in at the bottom, this represents the music that you will listen to if you read this magazine. The contents for NME is also packet full with writing but not so it doesn’t look professional, it just makes it look like the magazine is busy and worth reading. The text is very informal as it is using slang like ‘wtf’ in the main text and different words and sayings like that. This shows that the magazine is trying to relate more to the younger age because of the slang and pictures of teenagers smoking or drinking in pictures. The target audience for this magazine is people who prefer or listen to indie music and are mainly middle class. It also caters for the ages of 17-30 who are supposedly mainly men.
This magazine is more on the feminine side compared to the MNE. It shows this by having an attractive lady on the contents page posing and showing her legs off. I chose this contents page because it is completely different to the style of an NME magazine and because it shows a different side to music just like NME does.  The features used for this magazine are very good because the of the colours and the way they have set out the whole magazine and the text. The colours used are very simple but very effective, the colours are light grey, white and black go together to show the elegance of the magazine. This also shows that this magazine is obviously more for the ladies/girls because it is relating to the target audience and shows nothing to do with men what so ever, unlike NME has more man made colours, text styles and pictures that are aimed at men. This magazine, like MNE, this magazine is very layed back, it shows this by using slang words showing that the magazine is for the younger age as much older people may not understand some of the words or phrases used in this contents page, the target audience for this magazine would be the age 16-30 year olds because of the type of music that is in there and who is presented on the contents page.
